The Planning Committee has the following information for potential distance participants. We are planning on some level of distance participation - for both presenting and viewing presentations - with a distance conferencing technology, such as WisLine Web, which can be found at
http://www.uwex.edu/ics/wlweb/. We anticipate using Placeware, which will allow a PowerPoint-type presentation with teleconferencing. If you visit this site and click on "Hardware and Software Requirements" you will be able to check your hardware and software for future participation. Your will also be able to look over this vendor that provides distance conferencing technology, such as Placeware. Related costs to distance viewing participants are still being worked out by the planning committee. We are currently planning to webcast the introductory session of Conference. Details will follow and further information will be posted to this thread. best regards, Mark R. The Road Weather Management & Operations task force cordially invites you to participate in a National Highway Visibility Web Conference on Tuesday, April 26th 1:00 - 2:30 PM (EDT)? please mark your calendars. Please join three outstanding speakers: - Managing Traffic During Poor Visibility - A Journey through The Fog (an update on Caltrans Automated Warning (CAW) System) 1:03pm EST by Clint Gregory, California Department of Transportation - Using automated camera imagery processing for surface transportation weather applications 1:32pm EST by Bob Hallowell, MIT Lincoln Labs - I-68 Fog Warning System using Spread - Spectrum Radio: Challenges of Rural Mountainous Terrain 2:01pm EST by George Small, Maryland State Highway Administration National Highway Visibility speakers: "Managing Traffic During Poor Visibility - A Journey through The Fog (an update on Caltrans Automated Warning (CAW) System)" Clint Gregory has been with the California Department of Transportation for 12 years, having come from private consulting. During his State service, Clint has worked in many assignments from Design to Operations. He is currently the Branch Chief for Electrical Systems in District 10 located in Stockton, California. District 10 includes three Central Valley counties and five Sierra Nevada counties. Clint specializes in Transportation Management Systems including Traffic Signals, Census and Intelligent Transportation. He received his B. S. Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from San Diego State University, and an A. S. in Management from the Community College of the Air Force. Currently he is working on innovative strategies to implement advanced traffic management systems inside low visibility conditions. "Using automated camera imagery processing for surface transportation weather applications" Robert Hallowell is an associate staff member in the Weather Sensing Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory (MIT/LL) where his focus has been on automated weather products for aviation and surface transportation operations. Robert has been the lead researcher at MIT/LL for the FHWA's Winter Maintenance Decisions Support System (MDSS). His work has led to advanced automated algorithms for detecting roadway conditions and recommending appropriate treatment plans. Robert has also been involved in designing and implementing algorithms for the FAA's air traffic weather systems (both the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar [TDWR] and Integrated Terminal Weather System [ITWS]) since 1987. He was one of several staff at Lincoln Laboratory to develop, patent, and transfer to several private vendors an advanced technique for predicting the short-term motion of storms. Mr. Hallowell received his B.S. in meteorology from the University of Lowell in 1985 and worked briefly as an environmental consultant for Camp, Dresser & McKee in Boston, MA, before joining Lincoln Laboratory. "I-68 Fog Warning System using Spread - Spectrum Radio: Challenges of Rural Mountainous Terrain" George Small has been with the Maryland State Highway Administration for 39 years and serves as the Assistant District Engineer, Traffic. The last 29 years has been in the field of traffic engineering. He lives in LaVale , Allegany County and has been in charge of all traffic operations in District #6 since 1977. He is a Member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Maryland Traffic Engineer's Council, and the American Society of Highway Engineers. He is a member of the Traffic Advisory Committees in Garrett, Allegany and Washington Counties. Being on the front line, so to speak, he is familiar with trying to solve traffic operational problems and at the same time meeting the needs of local communities. On May 23, 2003 he was a first hand witness to the worst fog related crash in Maryland history on I-68, at Big Savage Mt. This crash and similar incidents has resulted in development and instillation of Maryland's first fog warning system. The concept of the system was presented at the National Highway Visibility Conference in May of 2004 at Madison Wisconsin. The system is now in operation and undergoing evaluation through his office. REGISTER NOW
http://nhi.fhwa.dot.gov/calender/eventreg.asp There are only 50 seats available to participate. If multiple people from your office or region have an interest in participating, it is recommended that you view the conference together and utilize only one seat per site. The 2005 National Highway Visibility Web Conference (held 4/26/05) papers (three of them) are posted at
http://knowledge.fhwa.dot.gov/cops/hcx.nsf/home?openform&Group=Road%20Weather%20Management%20and%20Operations&tab=REFERENCE Which is the Reference section of the FHWA Road Weather Management and Operations (RWMO) Community of Practice (CoP) at
http://knowledge.fhwa.dot.gov/rwmo. FYI, it was the best web conference I've participated in so far. Good presentations, too. My complements to Ray Murphy for the nice job. Mark Mark R.
