Detectable Warnings

I have noticed that several of the drawings on this site appear to indicate an
allowance for the truncated domes warning strip to be placed perpendicular to
traffic on a single direction ramp when the distance of the bottom of the ramp
to the furthest distance to the curb line is less than 6-ft. This is similar
to several municipal standard drawings I am aware of. Is this typically found
to be acceptable?
I oversee a lot of installations and for ease of construction and replacement I
see a preference. However we do have concerns about it not being placed
immediately behind the curve as to performance and meeting federal
requirements. I believe the allowance for a gap is "slight" in the regulations.
This may be more a preference as an engineer to straight lines, but since the
products we typically see are square it seems to work better.
Thank you for any feedback.
I'm unsure as to what "drawings on this site" you refer to. Is the type of
ramp a modified parallel, diagonal, blended transition, or? I'm assuming
you're talking about a modified parallel, in which case you would place the DW
(truncated domes) at the grade break if the landing at the bottom of the ramp
is less than 5 feet. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me
at the email address provided herein.
The installation of the domes should follow the slope or the ramp or the
direction of travel. Or alternately 4 foot edge of a 2'x4' installation should
be perpendicular to the slope. This crates a gap in coverage of the domes and
may be quite large as the radius increases. It is not a preference of an
engineer for a straight line but a function of traversability of the ramp by a
wheel chair. The wheel chair need to traverse the dome field along a line that
is made by the configuration of the individual domes which needs to coincide
with the direction of travel on the ramp.
