Welcome to the Safety Performance Measures group. The Safety Performance Measures group is intended to provide a forum for practitioners that are interested in performance measurement issues specifically related to Highway Safety . The forum is here to share knowledge, experience and research with each other. Past safety performance measures used by the FHWA, NHTSA and individual State DOTs have been shown to be very poor performance measures . Fatality rates and the change in the total number of annual fatalities can be very misleading at best . New safety performance measures have beene adopted and /or proposed by NHTSA, AASHTO and the FHWA which better reflect an individual states Strategic Highway Safety Programs progress . We hope you make the most of this opportunity to share your ideas and even your failures so that we all can benefit from our collective experiences.

Facilitator for this forum: Thomas M. Welch , Iowa DOT. Please send questions or concerns to Tom.Welch@dot.iowa.gov
